Close Approach during Hard Binary–Binary Scattering
It is now clear that there is a substantial population of primordial binaries in galactic globular clusters and that binary interactions are a major influence on globular cluster evolution. Collisional interactions involving stars in binaries may provide a significant channel for the formation of various stellar exotica, such as blue stragglers, X–ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. We report...
متن کاملAsteroseismology of close binary stars
In this review paper, we summarise the goals of asteroseismic studies of close binary stars. We first briefly recall the basic principles of asteroseismology, and highlight how the binarity of a star can be an asset, but also a complication, for the interpretation of the stellar oscillations. We discuss a few sample studies of pulsations in close binaries and summarise some case studies. This l...
متن کاملMicrolensing of close binary stars
The gravity due to a multiple-mass system has a remarkable gravitational effect: the extreme magnification of background light sources along extended so-called caustic lines. This property has been the channel for some remarkable astrophysical discoveries over the past decade, including the detection and characterisation of extra-solar planets, the routine analysis of limb-darkening, and, in on...
متن کاملStellar collisions during binary–binary and binary–single star interactions
Physical collisions between stars occur frequently in dense star clusters, either via close encounters between two single stars, or during strong dynamical interactions involving binary stars. Here we study stellar collisions that occur during binary–single and binary–binary interactions, by performing numerical scattering experiments. Our results include cross sections, branching ratios, and s...
متن کاملBinary-single-star Scattering — Vii. Hard Binary Exchange Cross Sections for Arbitrary Mass Ratios: Numerical Results and Semi-analytic Fits
We present the first comprehensive fitting formula for exchange reactions of arbitrary mass ratios. In a comparison with numerical results, this expression is shown to be accurate in the hard binary limit to within 25% for most mass ratios. The result will be useful in forming quantitative estimates for the branching ratios of various exchange reactions in astrophysical applications. For exampl...
